Term 1 Weeks 1 to 13 Unit 57: P1 - 4




On completion of this term you should have achieved a pass grade in:
  1. Understanding the different applications of photography Weeks 1 to 6 (With Chris)
  2. Knowing how to use photographic equipment and employ photographic techniques Weeks 1 to 6 (With Don)
  3. Being able to plan and produce photographic images for a specified purpose Weeks 6 to 11 (Both)
  4. Being able to reflect upon photographic work. Week 12 (Both)
  5. Referral week. Week 13 (Both)

Term 1 Weeks 1 to 6 (With Chris) Understanding the different applications of photography (see Assignment Brief: 57:P1 Class notes and Blogging)

During these weeks in lesson we will

  • look at and explore the different applications of photography such as: advertising; promotional; fashion; photojournalism; portraiture; high street, studio work; architectural; medical; illustration; fine art; documentary
  • Discuss and reflect on contexts and the use of these applications when creating: magazines; newspapers; hoardings; books; web pages; CD ROMs; for individual clients; galleries.
  • Discuss and explore some of the techniques utilised as part of the above photographic practice.
Term 1 Weeks 1 to 6 (With Don) Using photographic equipment and employ photographic techniques.

This is one of the practical parts of of this unit and during these weeks we will look at and utilise some of the following elements (See assignment brief .57: P2 Using Photographic equipment and techniques)


  • Photographic equipment: film-based camera; digital camera; tripod; lenses ; film types and storage devices ; artificial lights ; processing; printing ; digital imaging
  • Techniques: camera; processing ; printing; digital manipulation, digital printing
  • Health and safety: in darkroom; using lights; location risk assessments; legislation,
Term 1 Weeks 7 to 11(Both) Planning and producing photographic images.

Now it is over to you. For this part of the unit you will need to take your own pictures, in doing so you will need to need to show your skills in, (see Assignment Brief : 57 P3 My Photography)

  • Planning for your idea: e.g. creative thinking, research, ; recording ideas, shooting schedule,
  • Purpose of your idea: e.g advertising, promotional, photojournalism, portraiture, web pages, illustration, fine art, documentary
  • Presentation of your work: portfolio (material, electronic); exhibition; projection
Term 1 Week 12 (Both) Reflecting upon my photographic work

This part of the unit is about reflecting upon your work and the work achieved in this term, to achieve this you will need to cover the elements below. (see Assignment Brief 57: P4 The Evaluation Process)
  • Visual language: composition (juxtaposition, association, angle of view); image construction, eg form, texture, shape, pattern, line, tone, colour, symbols, metaphor, semiotics, connotation, representation
  • Audiences: range of consideration, eg social group, gender, peer group, occupational group, political views
  • Historical and cultural context: range of references, eg social, race, religion, political, economic, art and design references, popular culture
  • Finished products: realisation of intentions; fitness for purpose; responding to feedback; technical qualities; aesthetic qualities; skills and knowledge gained
  • Production processes: technical competencies; creative ability; time management
  • Sources of information: self-evaluation; documentation, eg ideas notes, production logs, sketches, trial shots, notes on professional photographers and photography; comments from others (audiences, peers, tutors, client)
Term 1 Week 13 Submission week
During this week you will be allocated with a time to discuss with your tutor the work handed in this term
